The Olin Neuropsychiatry Research Center at the Institute of Living (a division of Hartford Hospital) was founded in 2001 with the goal of being at the forefront of research in psychiatric and psychological disorders. Researchers involved with the Center come from the IOL, Yale, University of Connecticut, and Johns Hopkins, and collaborate with these institutions in the field of research. .

The current study on bipolar, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder at the Olin Center is part of a multi-site study with partners at the University of Georgia, University of Chicago, Harvard Medical School, and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
